The primary factors causing
poverty grip in Nigeria was enumerated in the previous article. In this
particular one, I will give some practical solutions to poverty in Nigeria.
Every problem has a solution. Humanity was created with the ability to solve
problems and that is one of the unique nature of mankind. The main factors
causing poverty in Nigeria can be summarized to be lack of relevant knowledge
and wisdom which is the ability to apply knowledge to create positive result.
Meanwhile, the quick cure
for poverty begins from conscious search for relevant knowledge and wise
application of knowledge acquired. I will share three basic steps we need to
start taking consciously and continuously to arrest the malady. We must always
have in mind that nothing just happen, things are made to happen.
Firstly, we need to work
assiduously as people to revive the situation of moral decadence and weakness.
Our society is in serious loss of moral values. The concern for moral
uprightness is getting weak day by day in our society. We need to reverse the
trend. It is possible. We need to start teaching positive character development
in our homes, schools, churches, media and organize seminars centering on good
moral behavior promotion. Good moral standard development will be the beginning
of the change we are clamoring for. It will solve the problem of selfishness
and corruption which has eaten deep into the fabrics of society causing us
waste and suffering. Parents, most importantly, should assume this crucial
responsibility through our homes which are the smallest units of our society.
This will help our young minds to catch this fact and apply it for better
tomorrow. Every human being on earth belongs to a family and the family is our
first source of education. Parents should exemplify good moral conduct through
their day to day behaviour and through their teaching as well. Young people
learn more from observation than what we teach them. So, we should teach them by
our actions complementing our words. Teach them the virtue of integrity and
truthfulness. Do these teachings during your family morning devotion or night
devotion. Create family-time-together and share ideas together.
Second factor that can fix
poverty faster than we can think of is promotion of professionalism and skill
acquisition. Every child and adult should be made to understand that the
primary reason for our existence is to contribute to solving the problems of
people around us thereby solving the problem of our society. We contribute
majorly through our work and through our contribution we earn money to make a
living. We all are therefore supposed to be engaged in one profession or the
other to be able to contribute our skill and expertise to solving the problem
of people. For instance, a skilled tailor will help people saw their cloths and
make money for serving someone who needs to have her cloths made. Every young
person should be mentored to understand this fact and guided to go for a
professional job skill acquisition through the conventional education system or
through informal skill acquisition system. They should also be guided to learn
skill relating to their natural abilities and gifts.
Thirdly, we should
collectively create systems that can support people who are underprivileged. We
should belong to Community Interest Charity (CIC) organizations to become part of
humanitarian missions. We don’t have to wait for government. They have crucial
part to play in this regard but everybody has to get involved. These three
categories of people must be actively involved in the cause of poverty
alleviation. The government, corporate organizations and individuals living in
a community should get involved in the calling for poverty alleviation. The conscious
efforts of these groups will hasten poverty reduction in our society.
